This course is for anyone looking to develop their filmmaking skills and gain experience working as a professional filmmaker and freelance content creator.

The BA (Hons) Film Production and Professional Practice qualification is a highly industry-focused study of film production, supporting you to work with live clients throughout your study as well as developing your portfolio, personal brand, and professional reputation. You will explore specialist technical skills and creative practice with the aim of developing your ability and confidence with filmmaking to become a skilled independent filmmaker with the ability to work within a freelance capacity or as part of a larger crew in a professional context.

Entry requirements

The entry requirements for this course are 72 UCAS tariff points, a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject or A Levels. Significant relevant prior learning and experience will also be considered. You might be asked to submit a portfolio of work to support your application.

On receipt of your application, you will be asked to provide a portfolio that demonstrates your ideas and abilities creatively. This may showcase work you have done at school or college, or alternatively this may capture independently devised projects. You will then be invited for interview in which you are able to discuss the course and ask any questions you may have.

How will I be assessed?

Assessments are measured against learning outcomes and while these must be achieved, we offer flexibility in relation to how learners complete these objectives; we celebrate diverse and innovative approaches to evidencing learning. Practical units will often be evidenced through exported final cuts with preparatory documentation and personal reflections. Theory-based assessments are traditionally evidenced through extended writing projects.

Skills you will learn

Students will develop skills in practical filmmaking in variety of job roles whilst refining their competency with time management, critical and creative thinking, scheduling, collaborative practice, working to a brief, planning and reflection.

Method of delivery

The BA in Film Production and Professional Practice is a face-to-face highly practical course with delivery taught through workshops, individual and group tasks, screenings, seminars and masterclasses.

Additional costs

There may be occasional additional costs related to traveling to film shoots and for students to experience events, industry workshops, masterclasses and other opportunities. Crew uniforms may be purchased for film shoots, but these will be discussed upon successful enrolment.
