Functional Skills Maths (from Entry Level to Level 2)

You do not need formal qualifications but you would be expected to have an assessment interview to place you on the correct level course.

If you have previously gained a Functional Skills Maths qualification, you can enrol to the next level.

You will have the opportunity to:

• Learn or improve your basic number skills
• Work with measure, shape and space
• Use the four rules of numbers, fractions, decimals and percentages
• Use a calculator
• Use and interpret charts, graphs, tables and statistics
• Develop problem-solving skills

There is one exam with two parts (calculator and non-calculator). Functional Skills exams can be taken at regular times throughout the course, when you are ready.

For most people the course will be free as they are funded by the government. However, if you already have a GCSE grade 4/C or above in this subject, are studying for a higher education qualification, or haven’t lived in the UK or EU for the past three years, there may be a fee.

Successful completion of these courses will generate a deeper understanding of functional Maths, developing communication skills, written work and analytical reading skills.

All students will undertake an initial diagnostic assessment. These will run September 2024, with opportunities to attend during the day or on an evening. Appointments will be made directly with each applicant to come into College and complete these once they have expressed an interest for the course. The assessment could take roughly an hour.

The course is delivered by experienced tutors using a variety of interesting resources.

We will work with you to identify the things you need to work on in order to achieve your goals. Sessions are friendly and fun and allow you to work at your own pace.

You will have one 3 hour lesson per week.

Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.

All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.

You will be equipped with the basic skills and knowledge in maths to help you progress and develop in a number of job opportunities to suit your personal needs and interests.
