City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills: Bricklaying
This course is designed for anyone who would like to learn some basic practical skills. The Level 1 Award is a City & Guilds qualification which focuses on the basic practical principles for the absolute novice to build confidence and underpinning Knowledge. You should be interested in the bricklaying industry and/or developing some home DIY skills, if this is you, then this is the starting point.
This programme is ideal for anyone who is looking to gain some initial underpinning knowledge, skills, and behaviours in the construction industry. You will learn how to use the specific tools and materials correctly and build upon your progress each week.
Students will learn, develop and practice the basic skills required for entry career progression in bricklaying, or personal use in the home. The course will introduce processes in producing basic bricklaying activities and how to safely use various tools.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course, however, a genuine interest in the subject and outstanding commitment & enthusiasm is essential.
Course units
A range of basic skills and techniques will be introduced including a combination of the following:
- Principles of building construction, information and communication
- Contribute to setting out and building of masonry structures up to damp proof course
- Carrying out block laying activities
- Carrying out bricklaying activities
- Carrying out cavity walling activities
- Health, safety and welfare in construction
Assessments
Practical and theory work will be assessed in line with awarding body requirements. Assessment in practical skills is continuous with end of year assignments in theory work.

Course progression
On successful completion of the Level 1 Award in Bricklaying course, students can progress onto the relevant Level 2 qualifications or employment.

Study methods
This course will be delivered by qualified experience tutors who are experts in their disciplines. Teaching will be done in a practical setting which will allow you to spend the time using the tools and resources.

As well as specialist construction workshops, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop/smart phone and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
Career progression
Students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to progress in their current employment or enter employment in the construction industry. You may also have the option to transfer to an apprenticeship and then progress on to higher-level courses in construction.
