City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry
This course is designed as progression from the Level 1 Certificate/Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery.
It is ideal for students who may want to work as a joiner in the construction sector, or increase their practical and theoretical skills as a hobby or for experience.
This course allows students to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry and joinery. It will also provide the key practical skills and theoretical knowledge for you to complete work around the home for your own personal development and DIY projects.
Entry requirements
Level 1 Award/Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery or prior industry experience is essential. (This will need to be discussed with tutors prior to enrolment to gauge the suitability of the course for your needs).
Course units
A range of basic skills and techniques will be introduced including a combination of the following:
- Health and safety
- Construction principles
- Synoptic practical assessments
- Carry out first fix flooring and roofing
- Carry out first fix frames, partitions and stairs
- Carry out second fixing operations
- Carry out carpentry maintenance
- Set up and operate a circular saw
Theory/underpinning knowledge to support industry standards.
Assessments
Work will be assessed in line with awarding body requirements and includes practical training and assessment within the College joinery workshop. Assessment process consists of externally marked exams, internal theory exams and practical synoptic tests.

Course progression
On successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry & Joinery, you could progress on to employment in the industry or an apprenticeship.

Study methods
This course will be delivered by qualified experience tutors who are experts in their disciplines. Teaching will be done in a practical setting which will allow you to spend the time using the tools and resources.

As well as specialist construction workshops, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, this course requires additional study from home and you will need access to a PC/laptop/smart phone and suitable Wi-Fi to prepare for the assessments.
Career progression
Students will be equipped with the skills and knowledge required to progress in their current employment or enter employment in the construction industry. You may also have the option to transfer to an apprenticeship and then progress on to higher-level courses in construction.
