Hairdressing VRQ Level 3
Level 3 is a high-level qualification expanding on the basic hairdressing skills of Level 2. This one year course offers the opportunity to gain supervisory skills in a wide range of hairdressing related activities. In addition, advanced practical hairdressing techniques are included, providing further career progression.
Entry requirements
You must have completed Hairdressing VRQ Level 2 and be confident working at this level. You should also have GCSE English and/or Maths at grade 4.
What will I study?
To gain the qualification, students must complete the following units:
- Monitor and Maintain Health and Safety Practice in the Salon
- Consultation Support for Colleagues on Hair Services
- Cut Women’s Hair to Create a Variety of Looks
- Style and Dress Hair Using a Variety of Techniques
- Colour Hair to Create a Variety of Looks
- Bridal Hair
- Cut Men’s Hair
- Hair Colour Correction
Additional activities:
- Competition work
- Online learning
- Organisational activities
- Work experience
- Trips to relevant hair shows and exhibitions
- English or Maths (if you haven’t already achieved a grade 4 or above)
Students who are completing English or Maths qualifications may be timetabled 4 days per week.
Additional Costs
All students are expected to purchase a practical kit and uniform, details of which will be provided during your advice and guidance discussion and induction.
Method of delivery
This course is predominantly a practical-based course. This means that the majority of your training will be delivered in a salon/workshop environment. You’ll be expected to complete theoretical knowledge through homework activities and directed learning, although some theory work will also be embedded into practical sessions. You will be required to complete tests and assignments as part of your study. You may be required to partake in online learning activities throughout the course, which are often led by employers and industry specialists.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed during practical sessions. The assessments are graded Pass, Merit and Distinction. You will be required to supply some of the models for assessment. Evidence must be shown in the form of a portfolio. Theory assessment will be carried out online, practical assessment will be continuous, and you will be required to demonstrate competency in a variety of tasks.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
Progression opportunities could include Specialist Hairstylists for home and abroad, Educators for manufacturers, Assessors, Lecturers, Demonstrators, and Specialist Hair Colourists/Fashion Styling. Students could progress on to the Level 4 Diploma in Salon Management or on to higher education such as the Foundation Degree in Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design (offered at York College). If you want to progress to higher education you must have GCSE at grade 4 or above in English and Maths.
