This session aims to familiarise students with the reason and methods of Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Feeding, (PEG).

PEG feeding is used to maintain the nutrition and hydration in infants who are unable to eat and drink by mouth for various medical reasons.

Course units

Throughout this session we will explore:

What is a PEG - have an awareness of what a PEG is. You will identify and understand the medical conditions that may require a PEG. You will be able to identify the procedure for PEG feed insertion and learn about aftercare.
Benefits and risks associated with PEG feeding - what are the longer term risks.
Location of the feeding tube with the reasons why it won’t fall out once in situ - you will review anatomy and physiology related to the gastrointestinal system.
Nutrition and hydration - you will discuss how nutrition and hydration is relevant to an individual with a PEG device and you will learn how to recognise signs and symptoms of dehydration.
Possible complications - including its relationship with the administration of medicines and what can go wrong with treatment.
Why communication is important between all those involved in PEG feed care - we all need to share information with colleagues/friends but what does it mean for PEG feeding information and documentation?
Person centred care, infection control and good documentation (let's stay safe) - you will learn how complete documentation in a safe and legal manner by adhering to standards, policies and procedures.

Assessments

The tutor will observe participants during the practical scenarios will provide feedback and guidance for improvement.

Presentation of key facts and outline of the session.
Practical Scenarios: participants will engage in simulated scenarios to apply learned principles in a controlled environment.
Q&A and discussion: an opportunity for participants to ask questions and discuss specific challenges related to moving and handling in their clinical practice.
Kahoot quiz to check knowledge and understanding.
Collaborative discussion to encourage participant engagement and knowledge-sharing.
