This course will provide a session on exploring the key principles and practices that are necessary for all healthcare professionals, caregivers, and anyone interested in understanding the complexities of wound care and infection prevention.

Course units

Throughout this session we will explore:

Introduction to Wound Healing - understand the reasons that affect the healing process, which includes age, nutrition, and underlying health conditions.

Types of Wounds - learn about various types of wounds, including abrasions, lacerations, skin tears and chronic wounds.

Infection Control Measures - discuss standard precautions and the importance of hand hygiene, personal protective equipment (PPE), and environmental cleanliness.

Common Pathogens (organisms causing disease) in Wound Infections - identify common bacteria, viruses, and fungi that can lead to wound infections and find out why antibiotics don’t work anymore.

Assessments

Practical hand washing and donning and doffing PPE (Personal protective equipment) assessment.

Study methods

  • Presentation of key facts and outline of the session
  • Fun quiz to check current knowledge
  • Wound Dressing Workshop: whilst you are learning about how wounds heal; you will take part in a practical session on valuable wound dressing techniques. You will be able to experiment with different types of dressings and understand the how and why we use them
  • Infection Control Simulation: you will practice proper hand hygiene, donning and doffing PPE, and maintaining a sterile environment, supporting your learning on pathogens in practice.

Facilities

This course will take place in our clinical room, which has a range of healthcare equipment for students to use to build their knowledge and skills.
